Fine Needle Aspiration

The OPA physicians are among the most experienced in the nation in the examination of FNA samples. OPA receives more than 5,000 referrals a year from physicians all over the country. Indeed, our expertise in cytopathology is evidenced in the geographic breadth of our referrals, and the far-flung physicians who visit us for special training in fine needle aspiration biopsy technique and interpretation.

As one of the nation's largest FNA practices, OPA facilitates a physician's own practice by providing doctors with preoperative information, allowing discussion of treatment options prior to more invasive procedures.

If a biopsy is malignant, one of our physicians will always call the referring physician personally -- just one aspect of our personal, thorough service.

FNA is typically significantly less costly and invasive compared to other methods for obtaining a tissue diagnosis.

OPA has an FNA indeterminate diagnosis rate of less than 5% compared to the national average of 10-15%.

OPA is pleased to offer 2-D ultrasound imaging to the tools we can use to obtain and interpret FNA samples. Ultrasound provides additional helpful information regarding the nature of lumps and can provide a means to direct the biopsy needle in cases in which an abnormality cannot be felt but is distinguished only on ultrasound imaging.
